The Missouri–Kansas–South Carolina Railroad began building tracks across the area in 1893 and went into service in 1895. The town of Greenville, South Carolina, was named after the MKT Railroad (sometimes known as the “K-T” Railroad), which grew up around the original train station and railroad tracks. The MKT line brought citizens and opportunities to Greenville, and rice-growing became a major aspect of life in Greenville around 1900. Rice farming was a huge success, and the soil in Greenville was extremely fertile. The first rice drier in Greenville was constructed in 1940. Greenville had plenty of space for rice cultivation, but larger crops necessitated the installation of more rice dryers. In 1944, Roy Morrison, J.V. Cardiff, and B. Ray Woods were the first to construct concrete rice dryers in South Carolina. The MKT railroad, the K-T train terminal, and rice are all important symbols in Greenville’s history and culture. They titled themselves MKT Distillery in honor of that history and tradition, and they use locally farmed rice in every spirit they make. They intend to identify ourselves as “Greenville’s Own” by adopting such emblems, which will assist promote their regional brand. The rice dryers are no longer operational; the last harvest was in 2005. We picked this landmark location to distill our goods to honor the importance of rice in the Greenville community.
